Ice Cream Emergency

About a month ago one of my co-workers was having a birthday.  Since they have all found out about the ice cream making, I volunteered to make some.  Simple enough.

The night before the birthday party, Amy and I also signed up to volunteer at a Young Life event.  So, instead of making the ice cream, we were out supervising hundreds of crazy high school students.  Very fun, but very exhausting.  We got off the bus around 9:30.  I ran home to see what recipe we could possibly make.  We are running out of normal flavors, so I was desperately trying to find something that wasn’t too weird.

Creme Fraiche Ice Cream.  Sounded harmless.  I thought it might be a simple flavor that would go well with the cake.  I called Amy and sent her on a grocery store mission to buy the Creme Fraiche.

The recipe is easy enough.  By now, we have mastered the standard steps so it did not take us too long.  Before we churned it, I dipped a finger in just to see.  I have adapted quite a trust for The Perfect Scoop.  Every flavor we have made has tasted so good, but when I stuck my finger in my mouth I was in for a rude awakening.  It was NASTY!  It tasted of cheese and nuts and sour milk with sugar on top!  Amy tried some too and was equally disgusted.  I don’t know why, but it was slightly traumatizing.  I wanted to cry a little.

What were we going to do?  I could not serve this nasty ice cream to anyone!  It was past 10PM and we were desparate.  We needed something fast, something easy, which is why at 10 o’clock at night after a full day of work, an evening of crazy high schoolers, and one ice cream disaster, we made peanut butter ice cream.  Super easy, super delicious.

My co-workers all loved the peanut butter ice cream; it totally saved the day!  But we were now stuck with a whole batch of the nastiest ice cream I have ever had.  What were we to do with it?

That weekend all of my college friends came to town for a wedding.  I invited them all over to my apartment after the wedding to hang out; little did they know what lay in store (or in freezer) for them!  All of them tried some, a testament to their love for me.  The guys actually asked for seconds!  Who knows!?  Perhaps this flavor tastes better to men.  I do not know.  I am not a man and was not been brave enough to try it again.

My aunt and uncle recently came to town, so naturally we asked them if they wanted to sample our ice cream.  They were very gracious and enjoyed the creme fraiche ice cream with their scones.  They actually enjoyed it!  The only catch was that they made us try the ice cream again.  After all this time, our reaction was the same.  IT WAS NASTY!!

Last week we managed to finally get rid of the last of the Creme Fraiche Ice Cream.  We had Amy’s mom and her friend from church over for lunch.  It turns out her friend is a chef and he really enjoyed the creme fraiche!!  He finished it all off and to make things even better, he had actually met the author of The Perfect Scoop!  It was the perfect ending to an ice cream emergency!
